What is wellness and why is it important?

Wellness is defined as the state of being in good health.  Good health includes your physical body and your mental health.  It is important to take time to check in on yourself.  Celebrate what is working and set goals for change .

Icebreaker Activity- Pose the question to children, "How can you be your best you?" Share responses and then create a word wall of vocabulary words that kids can associate with wellness.  Display the words and welcome children to work in groups or individually to write a Wellness Poem.  Consider using a jamboard and creating a display to welcome wellness every day in your learning space.

Setting Goals for Nutrition

Have you ever thought about each day as a food day for your body? A food day is described by documenting what you eat and when you eat it. What does your food day look like?

Read about the importance of fueling your body with proper nutrition and set goals for things you can add or delete to your food day. Try this food log.

If working in a classroom, consider pairing students to read articles and present Very Important Points to the class.

Spread Wellness in the Community

It is time to get creative and help your neighborhood.  We are always stronger together and it is important to stay connected and be positive.

As a class or a family, spread some joy in your community or at your school, with an idea below.

  1. Use sidewalk chalk to make a hopscotch on a sidewalk to promote physical activity.
  2. Share a healthy recipe with a friend or neighbor.
  3. Volunteer to clean an outside area.
  4. Donate a book to a community book site or little library.
  5. Start a walking club.
