Let's Talk About Stems You Can Eat!

Did you know that you can eat all kinds of plant parts like stems and roots? Over the next few weeks, we will learn about different common fruits and vegetables that are different parts of the plant. Today we are going talk all about types of stems that we eat!

What Exactly is a Stem?

Stems are the part of the plant that rises up from the roots in the ground to support the flowers, leaves and seeds above ground. Stems also provide the structure needed for nourishment (food and water) to be transported throughout the plant. 

An example of a stem we eat is asparagus. But we eat a lot of others too.

Fun Facts About Stems We Eat

  1. Asparagus takes 5 years to grow before its time to eat it
  2. Celery can grow to over 3 feet tall
  3. Bok choy is sometimes called a soup spoon because of the shape of its leaves.
