Let's Talk About Flowers You Can Eat!

Did you know that you can eat all kinds of plant parts like stems and roots? Over the next few weeks, we will learn about different common fruits and vegetables that are different parts of the plant. Today we are going talk all about types of flowers that we eat!

What Exactly is a Flower?

Flowers are the part of the plant that makes fruit and/or attracts animals to pollinate the plant. An example of a flower we eat is cauliflower. But we eat a lot of others too.

Here's some common edible flowers:
  • Artichoke

  • Cauliflower

  • Broccoli

  • Cloves

  • Hibiscus

  • Edible flowers like Nasturtiums

Fun Facts About Flowers We Eat

  1. Dandelions are a highly nutritious edible flower (but make sure they have not been sprayed with pesticides before eating)
  2. Flowers also have a sweet tooth- Cut flowers tend to remain fresher for longer when soaked in sugary or citrusy water.
  3. Scientists have uncovered about 270,000 different flower species.
