MLK Volunteer Day
We kicked off 2023 with a day of service, our first such event. In honor of Martin Luther King Day, we ran a community service event which was hosted by TasteWise Kids Board member Amber Perry and her team at Exelon. About 20 volunteers – including kids with their parent – joined TasteWise Kids at White Hall Market to assemble 300 food literacy activity bags.
During the event, volunteers learned about the mission of Taste Wise Kids, enjoyed some snacks and were able to get to know their colleagues better while helping us to assemble the activity kits. We loved having some kids join us as well – they loved putting together the March activity kits because they got to select the “right” play dough and fruit/vegetable cutters!
With the help of the volunteers, we are able to get the job done quickly and efficiently while coming together in community.
These activity bags are part of our 2023 commitment to get food activities and learning into the hands of food insecure Baltimore City students. The kits assembled this month are going to 100 kids at 2 City Schools as part of our partnership with Weekend Backpacks. These monthly activity kits will be distributed alongside the supplemental food that Weekend Backpacks is providing.
We have lots of fun things planned for the spring like February’s heart healthy puzzle activity and providing supplies for kids to plant their own seeds to sprout greens in April thanks to these activity bags. To learn more about why these food literacy activities are so important and the impact we are having, read our new Case Study on this work.
We plan to hold more of these service opportunities throughout 2023 and beyond. If you are interested in learning more, hosting one, or participating please email Linda at lrichardson@tastewisekids.org. We can’t do this without folks like you!
